Blue Jays

I've always loved the bluejay. Too bad he has such and annoying call. They were quite the presence this year.

Until the Next Time

We kept the fire going for about 3 hours. This was fun.

Top left and right: A Duroflame log helped get the fire started.
Bottom left: Deb brought over a couple of pumpkins she didn't get to carve.
Bottom right: After the week I had I feel I deserved this.

Sunday, November 9, 2014 - Stogie Time

Chilly outside but the fire in the fire pit helped me stay cozy.

Haven't used the fire pit for years.

Taking It All In

9-14-14
Another great day for sitting out back with a cigar. A little bit cooler than last weekend as you can see by the jacket, but still very pleasant. This is getting to be a habit.

Fuzzy Fellow

9-14-14
Found this little guy while working on breaking down branches and digging up saplings yesterday. Made my day.

Yard Work

Before

After
9-14-14
Worked hard in the yard this weekend. A heap of branches, some of them quite sizable, had been piling up behind the rhubarb. Yesterday I broke them down and for some I needed the saw and the ax.  My first ax chop caused me to fall down, but thankfully I was on soft grass and it was the kind of fall that was easy to roll into. Some well rooted saplings were growing up through the branches and took some doing to dig up. It's hard to see how many branches there were as the saplings covered them up (see top photo). The project took just over an hour.

Full Moon - Monday, Sept. 8, 2014

The September full moon is called the Full Corn Moon or, sometimes, the Full Barley Moon as it corresponds to the corn or barley harvest. Today would have been Dad's 73 birthday.

Sitting Out Back

Labor Day

Sunday, Sept. 7
Dale and I haven't spent much time sitting in the yard this season. Yesterday and Labor Day I sat out with a cigar.

Morning Glories

This year's morning glories.  When they open up they're light blue but when they close up they are purple. Notice the one in the lower left quadrant of the photo.

Off to Afton

Noel and I made one of our twice (sometimes thrice) yearly trips to Afton, Minnesota yesterday. At Squire House Martin was excited to be leaving for New York soon to do some merchandise shopping for the store. I'm assuming it'll be for holiday treasures. Afterward, we stopped to see the buffalo (or I guess I should say Bison) on the way home. They're beautiful.

Record Cold High

The record high for this date was 108 degrees set in 1936. The record cold high was 65 and that was set TODAY.

Starting to Plant Some Annuals

I found these at Bachman's and they are called superbells or calibrachoa. They need full sun and are supposed to last until the first hard frost.

Friday the 13th 2014 - Full Strawberry Moon

The moon was full shortly after midnight this morning. It's a rare occurance that the moon is full on Friday the 13th. The last time the moon was full on a Friday the 13th in June was 95 years ago. I've heard that the next time the full moon will fall on a Friday the 13th  is 2049. See below...

Other times the full moon has appeared on a Friday the 13th:

March 13, 1903
October 13, 1905
June 13, 1919
January 13, 1922
November 13, 1970
July 13, 1984
February 13, 1987

Ant on Peony Bud

Rhubarb

The rhubarb is seeding itself.

Peony Buds

Can't wait for the peonies to bloom. I planted some during the late part of summer in 2012. Deb was getting rid of them and asked me if I wanted them. They came back in 2013 but no flowers. They're back again this year but I'm not seeing any buds. I'll keep my fingers crossed. The ones pictured above are on Warren's blooming boulevard. I remember when my family moved into the house on Stevens so many years ago. There must have been about 10 peony bushes lined up along where the driveway bordered the yard. I remember watching the ants crawl over the buds and, being so young and not in the know about such things, asked Mom why they were doing this. She said they actually helped the buds open and that there must be something on the buds they liked.

Iris

The irises are peaking here. We noticed they were peaking a couple weeks ago in Leavenworth when we went to visit Sam and Becky.

Orange Blossom

Found this beautiful orange blossom while walking Athena this morning. It was growing in a neighbor's sidewalk garden.

Azaleas

The azaleas are popping left and right around town. These belong to a neighbor across the street.
