Allium

 

I've seen this plant around the neighborhood on blooming bouldvards for years. AI on my computer determined from this photo I took as Allium. 

Here's some of the info I found on Wikipedia:

"Allium is a large genus of monocotyledonous flowering plants with 1112 accepted species, making Allium the largest genus in the family Amaryllidaceae and among the largest plant genera in the world. Many of the species are edible, and some have a long history of cultivation and human consumption such as the onion, garlic, scallions, shallots, leeks, and chives."

"Allium species occur in temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere, except for a few species occurring in Chile (such as A. juncifolium), Brazil (A. sellovianum), and tropical Africa (A. spathaceum). They vary in height between 5–150 centimetres (2–59 in). The flowers form an umbel at the top of a leafless stalk. The bulbs vary in size between species, from small (around 2–3 mm in diameter) to rather large (8–10 cm). Some species (such as Welsh onion A. fistulosum and leeks (A. ampeloprasum)) develop thickened leaf-bases rather than forming bulbs as such."

Not sure though what the specific species shown in my photo is though.

Iris flowers on a neighbor's blooming boulevard. 

Dale and I went to Bachman's today and picked up some annuals. Shown above are petunias, pansies, and snapdragons. Not gonna plant them yet as it's supposed to be cool tonight as in the mid to upper 30s. These plants are pretty hearty but I don't want to take a chance. Tonight I'll cover them up.

Peony Buds

Can't wait for the peonies to bloom. I planted some during the late part of summer in 2012. Deb was getting rid of them and asked me if I wanted them. They came back in 2013 but no flowers. They're back again this year but I'm not seeing any buds. I'll keep my fingers crossed. The ones pictured above are on Warren's blooming boulevard. I remember when my family moved into the house on Stevens so many years ago. There must have been about 10 peony bushes lined up along where the driveway bordered the yard. I remember watching the ants crawl over the buds and, being so young and not in the know about such things, asked Mom why they were doing this. She said they actually helped the buds open and that there must be something on the buds they liked.

Iris

The irises are peaking here. We noticed they were peaking a couple weeks ago in Leavenworth when we went to visit Sam and Becky.

Coneflowers

These coneflowers are from a neighbor's blooming boulevard. I had a number of them in the backyard as recently as couple of years ago. Last year just one scraggly looking one came back and this year not even that one made it. Not sure why they've had such trouble. I feel so behind on the yard work this year. The summer course I'm taking is making it difficult to do so.

Found these gorgeous purple flowers growing on a neighbor's blooming boulevard. I'm not sure what kind they are.

Mark's Peonies

Mark, our neighbor across the street, has some peonies growing on his blooming boulevard. I grew up with pink peonies but think the white ones are pretty too. The smell of them brings me right back to the backyard of the house on Stevens.

Pretty Fall Leaves

Took this photo a few days ago on one of my walks. This shrub is on a neighbor's blooming boulevard and I found the leaves to be very unique looking.

Wow, we're half and half! Snapped this shot last night. It's from a neighbor's blooming boulevard. Not sure what kind of flower this is but it sure is pretty. I've seen lot's of them around lately.

Coneflowers

A few years ago I had three amazing coneflower plants in the backyard. For the last two summers only one has come back and it ain't lookin' so good. I miss them because they were big and beautiful and they attracted lots of butterflies. Anyway, a lot of the coneflowers around the neighborhood are looking way past their peak and are just looking a bit tired.

The top photo shows my sad looking coneflower plant that's tried hard the past couple summers but just never quite made it to its former glory. The bottom photo shows a coneflower plant growing on a neighbor's blooming boulevard. They just don't look as perky when you get to this time of August.

I Love August

Yesterday at church a seminary student gave the homily. He began by saying how much he hates August and that to him this month is to summer what February is to winter - long and drawn out. He lost all of my attention at this point. It wasn't out of anger because, after all, he is entitled to his own opinion, but because I began to drift off and think about the many reasons I love August. It happens to be the month of my birthday but, more than this, it's the time of the season that I'm relaxed and beginning to look forward to going back to work while still appreciative of the vacation time I have left. I love fall and in August I begin to notice signs of the inevitable changes of the season - the changes in light, leaves, temperature and even the length of time between cricket chirps in the evening. In addition to this the days, while still warm, are not a likely to be as stiflingly hot as July. Oh yeah, and the Minnesota State Fair is on the horizon too (I believe it begins this year on August 25). The photo you see with this post is of a neighbor's blooming boulevard that I spotted on one of my walks today - a beautiful August day.

Mark's Blooming Boulevard

Ran into our neighbor Mark as I was walking up to Walgreens to get some ice for cocktails tonight. These flowers are on his blooming boulevard and although I took this photo back on July 22 they still look pretty close to what you see here. Heavy showers overnight last night. It was still raining when I woke up this morning. I love waking up to the sound of rain.
