October Light

I love the afternoon light in October. Our silver maple turns such a nice shade of yellow.

Cicadas 1

You know it's August when the bugs I assume to be cicadas are buzzing away in full force. As a kid I'd hear the noise and look up to see what it was but would never see anything. The only thing I could come up with was electricity coursing through the wires. Dale and I found what is either this bugs skin or exoskeleton. I need to find an entomologist to confirm my theories.

Cicadas 2

Athena and I ran into what I think is a cicada. I'm assuming this bug is about to shed its skin.

Cicadas 3

Athena watches the bug with a great deal of interest.

August 1

August has arrived. It is my favorite month. My birthday is in August but I love it for more than that. By August I've been on vacation for about 7 weeks and am feeling quite a bit more relaxed than was the case in June and most of July. Dale is back for good from  Madeline Island and it is always better when he is around. The Minnesota State Fair is in August and I'm ready to be excited about it!

Tiger Lilies

Our tiger lilies consistently bloom later than all the other ones I see around town. Not sure why. Anyway, this is the first one to flower in our garden.

July Planting 1

Don't know that I've waited until July for my first venture to Bachman's to buy plants. There wasn't much left in the way of annuals but I found some nice perennials.  The plant on the left with the yellow flowers is called rudbeckia or Denver daisy. The red flowers on the right belong to a plant called gaillardia or Arizona red shades.

July Planting 2

The red flowers in the center of the photo belong to a plant called yarrow. This version is strawberry seduction.

June

June

The sun is rich
   And gladly pays
In golden hours,
   Silver days,

And long green weeks
   That never end.
School's out. The time
   Is ours to spend.

There's Little League,
   Hopscotch, the creek,
And after supper,
   Hide and seek.

That live-long light
   Is like a dream,
And freckles come
   Like flies to cream.

  --John Updike

The part...:

"And long green weeks
   That never end.
School's out. The time
   Is ours to spend."

...speaks to me because I still have summers off and I truly appreciate that the time is mine to spend.

As a kid, I loved walking Minnehaha Creek in the summer. I have especially fond memories of walking Willie, the family dog. After supper our version of hide and seek was kick the can.

Peonies

These photos were taken just a little over a week ago and feature the white peonies in our own yard. Deb gave me these a couple years ago and this is the first year they've flowered nicely. Although they've since faded they sure were gorgeous.

Peonies

June is here and the peonies have been lovely. The above are a neighbor's from about a week ago. We had pink peonies at the house on Stevens although I think ours were of a lighter variety.

Signs of Spring - Flowering Tree

Found this flowering tree on a boulevard during my walk home from school this past week. Have never seen this flower before. Wonder what kind of tree this is.

Cleaning Up

Monday, April 5, 2016

Squeezed in a little yard work. Cleaned up this corning of the backyard.  Trying to get a head start on things so I'm not overwhelmed when school lets out.
