January 23 - Snow Day

Yesterday's snow ended up being quite a storm. Turns out buses had a difficult time getting kids home from school yesterday afternoon. Citywide, some didn't drop off kids until 8 p.m.  Woke up this morning to hear on the radio that school was cancelled due to roads and streets still being a mess. Snow day!!

After walking home and shoveling yesterday I estimated there was at least 8 inches of snow that had fallen. Dale told me this morning that it was actually around 11 when all was said and done.
It was a glorious sunny day today. And the backyard looked great. Dale did a little more shoveling this morning and I did a little touch-up on the driveway. Dale had to work and I spent a lot of time doing laundry and lying on the couch.

It's the 7th anniversary of this blog by the way.

According to Matt Brickman we got just under 10 inches at the airport. No school today due to this.

First Snowfall of the Season

First snowfall of the season with any accumulation occurred overnight. I snapped this backyard shot this morning as Dale was pulling the car out of the garage to drive me to work. If you look closely you can see him in the front and Athena sitting in the back. She loves to ride in the car.

May Snow

A little snow fell today although nothing accumulated. It's supposed to start snowing again overnight. Dale told me that the National Weather Service has issued a severe winter storm warning and I just read that there's a 60% chance that we'll have a May snowfall record. Go figure.

Last Night's Snow

The snow began late yesterday afternoon and it snowed overnight. We were supposed to get 6-8 inches by morning but I'd say we only got 2 or 3.

Snow!

9.3 inches of snow officially fell March 4 - 5.  Not enough to call off school.  Rats!

The Snowmound Returns!

Hey, we actually have a snow mound this year! Did a little shoveling just before snapping this shot.  According to Paul Douglas, 2 inches of snow fell yesterday at MSP airport.

12-12-12

The past weekend we found ourselves with at least 12 inches of snow. Considering we had around 22 inches ALL last season, I'd say that's pretty substantial! Dale did most of the shoveling, God bless him, but I raked the roof. Got that done in about 30 minutes. Not bad, huh? Shoveling all the snow I pulled down took longer. We got to 41 degrees today so we experienced some melting. The above photo was taken a few days ago in the backyard.

January 23: Beginning Year 2 of The Backyard - Joe's Almanac

We're past the deep freeze of the last few days. Around 28 degrees for a high today. According to Todd Nelson of the Minneapolis Star Tribune we've only had just over a foot of snow this season which is about 18 inches below normal. Last year at this time, as documented in this blog, we were at about 55 inches of snow for the season. Todd is predicting mid-30s later this week. Sunrise today was at 7:43 a.m. and sunset was at 5:08 p.m. That's 9 hours and 25 minutes of daylight. Above photo taken this morning at

The Garden In Winter - Rabbit Tracks

Just reminded of the amount of snow that fell last winter season as the paper this morning pointed out we had 86.6 inches. We've got quite a ways to go if we're going to beat that record. This photo shows some bunny tracks in the snow after our most recent snow.

More Snow On the Way?

We're supposed to get some more snow starting tomorrow into Wednesday morning. We're now at about 85 " for the season which makes this the fourth snowiest winter on record for Minneapolis.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

As of today we've officially had 80.2 inches of snow this season. That makes this the seventh snowiest winter on record for Minneapolis (and it ain't officially over yet!). High is supposed to push 50 degrees today! Glad to see signs of melt. Also, we're at 11 hours and 59 minutes of daylight!

Snowfall for the season: 74.9"

I've read that Monday's storm gave us 13.4" and that has set a record for the biggest February snowfall on record. Right now we're at the 10th snowiest winter on record and that's before the month of March which is, I think, the snowiest month of the year.
