Slightly More Than 12 and a Half Hours Daylight!
Lawns and boulevards still covered with snow. That snowmound still soldiers on.
Both photos taken 3-28-11. In the top photo, water dripping from neighbors garage forms icicles on shrubbery in the alley.

Home from Washington D.C.
Mom and I flew home from D.C. yesterday afternoon and returned to a snow covered Minneapolis. The photo at left was taken at an art show at my niece Abby's pre-school. It actually snowed very lightly at Pete's home in Virginia yesterday morning but it melted very quickly.

Horribly Wet, Grey, and Cold
Second day of break and it's just gross outside. The city-wide parking ban was lifted so I guess I'll just have to count that as a sign of spring. I'll take what I can get!

First Full Day of Spring 2011
I'm on spring break this week which, sadly, has fallen during one of the yuckiest parts of Spring: the beginning. Today is actually the first full day of Spring which started yesterday at about 6:21 p.m. Sophie loves to take walks; it's her main job to sniff out the neighborhood and leave her mark on key spots. She especially loves to walk in springtime as the rain helps kick up the smell quotient and the melting snow uncovers lots of Autumn leaves that didn't get picked up in time for the first snow, and trash that has long been covered up.
Above, Sophie shows that she likes to roll and/or scrub her face in the dirty snow of early spring. Picture taken in the backyard. (Photo 3-21-11)

Today's the Last Full Day of Winter
Today is the last full day of winter. Spring begins tomorrow at 6:21 p.m. To the right of the barberry bush trying to break free from the snowpack is my shadow. (Photo 3-18-11)
Happy St. Joseph's Day!
Full Moon - Saturday March 19, 2011
The March full moon is also known as the Full Worm Moon. Today the moon will approach Earth at a distance of 221,567 miles in its elliptical orbit - the closest it will have passed since 1992.
The following is from the Old Farmer's Almanac:
"Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names."
"Full Worm Moon - March: As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter: or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter."

12 Hours, 1 Minute Total Daylight!
Yes, we're just a hair past 12 hours total daylight and the recent warmer, sunnier days have put a dent in the snow-pack. According to Twin Cities weather guru Paul Douglas, "we've had at least a trace of snow on the ground since Nov. 23 and at least 1 inch of snow on the ground since Dec. 1, nearly 4 months ago!" I think the driveway snowmound (pictured above) looks slightly diminished.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
As of today we've officially had 80.2 inches of snow this season. That makes this the seventh snowiest winter on record for Minneapolis (and it ain't officially over yet!). High is supposed to push 50 degrees today! Glad to see signs of melt. Also, we're at 11 hours and 59 minutes of daylight!

More Evidence of Receding Snow
Haven't seen the hose since November. In fact, I don't think the south side of the yard had been walked on since then.

Disappearing Snow
We're finally experiencing quite a melt. The snow is beginning to recede from the house to expose some long covered objects.

Oh, The Joys of Homeownership
The outside elements are doing their darndest to get in the house. The photo, taken this morning, shows the leakage that occurred last night. Well, at least it happened on the porch and not the living room.

Snowman and Pal
I came across a neighbor and her daughter making these snow-beings as I walked Sophie a couple days ago. Very fun. I stopped by yesterday to get a photo. (Photo 3-9-11)

Heard Another Cardinal This Morning
I heard another cardinal, second of the year, when I took Sophie out for a walk this morning. Looked up and saw a red splotch way up high in the tree across the street singing its beautiful song.
No Snowpocalypse?
We were supposed to get a ton more snow this week but currently the weather gurus are backing off that prediction. The storm is moving south but we'll still get some snow. How much remains to be seen.
