January 23 - Snow Day

Yesterday's snow ended up being quite a storm. Turns out buses had a difficult time getting kids home from school yesterday afternoon. Citywide, some didn't drop off kids until 8 p.m.  Woke up this morning to hear on the radio that school was cancelled due to roads and streets still being a mess. Snow day!!

After walking home and shoveling yesterday I estimated there was at least 8 inches of snow that had fallen. Dale told me this morning that it was actually around 11 when all was said and done.
It was a glorious sunny day today. And the backyard looked great. Dale did a little more shoveling this morning and I did a little touch-up on the driveway. Dale had to work and I spent a lot of time doing laundry and lying on the couch.

It's the 7th anniversary of this blog by the way.

Snowmound

I was telling Dale that I think it has been a while that the snowmound has been this big.

Snow Mound

Warmed up to 34 degrees today. Supposed to be below zero by Monday. Little bit of snow today.

The Snowmound Returns!

Hey, we actually have a snow mound this year! Did a little shoveling just before snapping this shot.  According to Paul Douglas, 2 inches of snow fell yesterday at MSP airport.

Fast Changes

Upper 30s, gray and rainy yesterday. Teens for high today. Nine degrees as I write this.

January 23: 1 Year Anniversary for The Backyard - Joe's Almanac

This is the one year anniversary of this blog! I can't believe how quickly time has gone by. The top photo was taken January 23, 2011. The bottom photo was taken today, January 23, 2012. Quite a difference in the amount of snow we have. No snowmound so far this year!

First shot of this view with actual snow on the ground since last season but still no snowmound.

Snow

First signs of snow today. The top photo was taken at 9:55 a.m. and the bottom phot0 taken at 11:57 a.m. How long until there's a snowmound? Time'll tell...

Rain Today!

Yes, it actually rained today. Hard. It's about time. Also, within just a couple months there may be a snowmound blocking this view.

High Dewpoint

It is so nasty, wet and sticky outside right now. Dale got back from the Island late yesterday so this morning we hauled office materials he brought home with him back to his office. As he and I were driving home we heard on the radio that the dew point is 72. Yuk. As it turns out the most work I could handle doing in the yard today is moving the hose. Anyway, here's a photo I took a few days ago. I couldn't help but think back to a few months ago when that mountainous snowmound blocked this view. Extreme heat or cold - that's the continental climate for you!

Salvia

Hard to believe that this salvia is bloom-
ing right where last winter's massive snowmound was. I love the color of the blooms but this salvia only flowers for a short time. Ya gotta enjoy it while it lasts.

Snow "mound"

Snowmound's not lookin' so mighty anymore. It's taking a lot longer to go away than I ever expected.

Now THAT'S What I'm Talkin' 'Bout!

Smallest I've seen this snow-
mound in a while. Quite a change from the last time I photo-
graphed it about a week ago.

More Yucky Melt

Damp, raw and lightly raining as I walked Sophie this morning with the rain briefly switching to snow a couple times. Well, at least it was a nice weekend. The TCF bank clock in Highland Park read 61 degrees when I drove by yesterday.

Slightly More Than 12 and a Half Hours Daylight!

Lawns and boulevards still covered with snow. That snowmound still soldiers on.

Both photos taken 3-28-11. In the top photo, water dripping from neighbors garage forms icicles on shrubbery in the alley.

Horribly Wet, Grey, and Cold

Second day of break and it's just gross outside. The city-wide parking ban was lifted so I guess I'll just have to count that as a sign of spring. I'll take what I can get!

12 Hours, 1 Minute Total Daylight!

Yes, we're just a hair past 12 hours total daylight and the recent warmer, sunnier days have put a dent in the snow-pack. According to Twin Cities weather guru Paul Douglas, "we've had at least a trace of snow on the ground since Nov. 23 and at least 1 inch of snow on the ground since Dec. 1, nearly 4 months ago!" I think the driveway snowmound (pictured above) looks slightly diminished.
