The Full Strawberry Moon

Friday, June 21, 2024

Full moon today.

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac: "June’s full Moon—typically the last full Moon of spring or the first of summer—has traditionally been called the Strawberry Moon. While strawberries certainly are a reddish-pink color and are roundish in shape, the origin of the name “Strawberry Moon” has nothing to do with the Moon’s hue or appearance. A Moon usually appears reddish when it’s close to the horizon because the light rays must pass through the densest layers of the atmosphere."

Also according to the Old Farmer's Almanac: "This Strawberry Moon name has been used by Native American Algonquian tribes that live in the northeastern United States as well as the Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples to mark the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered. The Haida term Berries Ripen Moon reflects this as well. As flowers bloom and early fruit ripens, June is a time of great abundance for many."

Memorial Day 2024

Monday, May 27, 2024

Above pictures taken about a week ago. The bridal wreath spirea in Andrea's yard really came back nicely this year. We were really worried about it based on what is looked like last year.

Here are the peonies about a week ago.

And here they are now.

Cigar today too.

A Weekend In May: Sunday

Sunday, May 12, 2024

The peony bush is really doing well. The flowers should pop pretty soon.

Quite warm. I believe we hit the 80s in early April but I think this is the first time we've done so in May. Canadian fire season has begun and it became more obvious here this afternoon.

Fit in a couple Romeo y Julietas.

A Weekend In May: Saturday Part 2

Saturday, May 11, 2024

Came out again after raking to sit in the sun.

Ada was out in her backyard and gave me a tip. I texted Dale the above.

Here's another photo from the occasion.

A Weekend In May: Saturday Part 1

Saturday, May 11, 2024

Dale was off to breakfast with a friend this morning. I sat outside with some coffee.

My goal today was to rake out the grill garden. Mission accomplished.

The temperature was comfortable.

A Weekend In May: Friday

Friday, May 10, 2024

So far May has been splendid. Mostly sunny with highs in the upper 60s/lower70s. It actually seems like late spring. It seems for a few years now spring going into May has remained chilly and rainy and then suddenly jumps to really hot summer weather. I've really missed this beautiful transition period we're experiencing now. Work's been rough for both Dale and me. We're beginning the weekend with cocktail hour in the back yard.

I lit up a little Macanudo and poured myself an Old Fashioned. The evening started out pleasantly warm but as soon as the sun dipped below the trees it felt a little coolish but putting on a jacket solved that problem.

I made it a two cigar night with my second being a Romeo y Julieta. Good to be hanging out in the back yard in nice weather again.
