Snowfall for the season: 74.9"

I've read that Monday's storm gave us 13.4" and that has set a record for the biggest February snowfall on record. Right now we're at the 10th snowiest winter on record and that's before the month of March which is, I think, the snowiest month of the year.

According to local weather guru Sven Sundegaard, we got about 13 inches out of yesterday's snowfall.

The photos here show Sophie as she departed on one of her walks yesterday (top) and when her walk was finished and she awaited a return to the great indoors (bottom).

Full Moon - Saturday February 19, 2011

Full moon yesterday. The February full moon is known as the Full Snow Moon.

The following is from the Old Farmer's Almanac:

"Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names."

"Full Snow Moon - February: Since the heaviest snow usually falls during this month, native tribes of the north and east most often called February's full Moon the Full Snow Moon, Some tribes also referred to this Moon as the Full Hunger Moon, since harsh weather conditions in their areas made hunting very difficult."

Grass!!

The melting continues. Granted, this spot was in an area of the yard we had shoveled out so the dog could go pee, but it's still a spot of grass and we haven't seen that in quite a while!

The Thaw Continues

We're a bit away from Spring but we've lost a lot of snow since the "warm" weather arrived this past Friday.

Thaw

We had a high of 48 degrees yesterday and saw the snow recede a little bit. Happy Valentine's Day!

The photo at right is a heart ornament made by my mom. She makes them for Christmas but gave it to me this past weekend.

February 13, 1975 - A Poem by James Schuyler

FEBRUARY 13, 1975

Tomorrow is St. Valentine's:
tomorrow I'll think about
that. Always nervous, even
after a good sleep I'd like
to climb back into. The sun
shines on yesterday's new-
fallen snow and yestereven
it turned the world to pink
and rose and steel-blue
buildings. Helene is restless:
leaving soon. And what then
will I do with myself? Some-
one is watching morning
TV. I'm not reduced to that
yet. I wish one could press
snowflakes in a book like flowers.

First Cardinal of the Year

I heard the unmistakable sound of a cardinal as I stepped out the backdoor this morning - that beautiful, beautiful trill.

Saturday February 12, 2011

I found this Coke can on the window after work on the day the guys came over to clear the ice dams. I don't mind that they left it. I think our desire for icy cold beverages on sub-zero days is kind of funny. Especially for drinking outside!

The ice dam guys came by yesterday to make the ice dams go away.

Dad

Dad died February 7, 2007 on a very cold yet sunny day just like today. I'm including a picture of one of his garden stones as a remembrance. He really did love to putter in the yard.
