Harvest Moon

Saturday, September 30, 2023

Squeezed in a Romeo y Julieta before dinner tonight. Dale joined me in the back yard. It was very pleasant out but it's really getting darker so much earlier now.

Took a walk after dinner and caught a glimpse of the Harvest Moon which peaked yesterday morning. Can NOT believe tomorrow is the 1st of October.

Messy Backyard

Sunday, September 24, 2023

First day of fall yesterday. Today sat in the yard with a cigar.

As mentioned in the previous post I've had a broken fibula just above my ankle. I'm still in my boot but it'll come off this Thursday. I'm going to have to put some time getting all of this cleaned up. It's really gotten overgrown since my surgery.

The pine tree is shedding needles galore. They are such a pain in the neck to clean up.

Broken Bone

September 17, 2023

Broke my fibula above my ankle in July and haven't been able to do as much yardwork. The yard has gone to hell.

Despite it looking like crap I'm still enjoying being in it. (My boot is barely visible in the lower left of the photo.)

Rain Gauge

Monday, June 26, 2023

Dale bought a rain gauge at Bachman's yesterday. He said we've had about a quarter inch since then.

Planted most of the flowers I bought yesterday.

More Flowers

Sunday, June 25, 2023

Dale and I stopped by Bachman's today and bought even more flowers.

Planting Celosia

Saturday, June 24, 2023

Planted the celosia I bought yesterday. After doing so I read  that it does better planted in garden beds rather than containers. Oh well. I don't want to chance the rabbits getting at it.

First Daylily Bloom & More

Friday, June 23, 2023

First day lily flower appeared recently.

I've done a lot of yard work this summer. So far it’s been a lot of raking out of gardens and weeding but I’m moving on the the planting flowers phase. Today I went to Bachman’s for some annuals. On top of the cart pictured below is a flower called celosia. Dale really likes this kind so I picked up a lot of it. Much harder to see underneath are some snapdragons. There’s also some dusty miller down there which is hidden from view. Also got some potting soil.

Celosia. The following is from the University of Minnesota Extension website: “Celosia is a member of the amaranth family and is a very common plant in Minnesota annual gardens due to their ease of care and wide array of flower structures and colors. The name Celosia originates from the Greek word for “burning” due to the flame-like flower heads. The species used for flowering annuals is believed to be native to the Mediterranean region or East Africa and also commonly known as “woolflowers”.Leaves of this plant are edible and have a spinach-like taste while the plant is young but after flowering, the leaves turn bitter.”

Smoke from the Canadian Wild Fires

 Thursday, June 15, 2023

Picture taken at school this morning. The air was much clearer by this afternoon. Last day of school by the way. Let summer begin.

Smoke from the Canadian Wild Fires

Thursday, June 14, 2023

The smoke from the Canadian fires is really bad today. You could even smell it. At least the sky isn’t orange like in New York. Can only imagine how bad it is in Canada.

This, of course, made local news...

...but also the national news.

Odds and Ends

Sunday, June 4, 2023

A couple of peonies are coming in on the side of the house.

Salvia's starting to come in too.

Brought a few peonies inside.

Hot one today. Thankfully not too humid. Feelin' like summer.

Memorial Day Weekend - Bridal Wreath Spirea

Sunday, May 28, 2023

I'm still so shocked by how poorly Andrea's Bridal Wreath Spirea came back this year. Why the bush on the left is flowering and the others aren't I'm not sure.

Memorial Day Weekend 2023 - Peonies

Sunday, May 28, 2023

The peony bush is getting big and tall enough that it's starting to droop. I need to put up some supports.

Memorial Day Weekend 2023 - Cigar Time

Sunday, May 28, 2023

Got some weeding done this morning. Didn't spend a ton of time on it but it feels good to do a little every day. Dale's able to help out a lot more in the yard this year due to him not having to get ready to go up to the island which is nice since I don't feel like I have to do as much to keep up with it all. Lit up a Romeo y Julieta this afternoon and it was fantastic.

Very quiet in the neighborhood today. Not surprising due to it being Memorial Day weekend. However, because of the gorgeous weather of late I’ve gotten used to there being a lot more activity outside.

The Lily of the Valley is blooming and boy oh boy is it fragrant.

Memorial Day Weekend 2023 - Peonies

Saturday, May 27, 2023

The peonies are getting ready to pop. Can't wait.

Memorial Day Weekend 2023 - Bunny

Saturday, May 27, 2023

Warren came over for dinner last night. While Dale was grilling this little guy came out for a visit.

Memorial Day Weekend 2023 - Bridal Wreath Spirea and Ferns

Saturday, May 27, 2023

The ferns and the bridal wreath spirea did not come in this year as fully as they did last year. Not sure why. Last year's drought maybe? Shown below is a photo from Memorial Day Weekend just last year.

Above is a photo of a bush of bridal wreath spirea which I snapped a few days ago while walking home from school. P.S. Can't wait for summer vacation.
